Committees and Advisors
We have four decision-making bodies at Athabasca University. Each is very supportive of and informed about Indigenous Education as a whole.
Nehiyiwak Caucus (Formed 1998)
The Caucus serves as the principal advisory panel to the Director of Indigenous Education at Athabasca University in matters such as course and program development, marketing and recruiting strategies, labour relations and human rights issues as related to Indigenous peoples. Working from the circle, and operating by consensus, the caucus and its members discuss long-term planning and shorter term issues. The Director identifies issues requiring discussion within a broader decision-making forum and for which community input is required. These issues are brought to the Nehiyiwak Caucus for discussion and decision-making.
The Internal Advisory Committee (IAC) (Formed 2000)
IAC serves as a body within the University, which addresses concerns, and issues which impact the Athabasca University community as a whole. The decision to implement Cree language training for staff members or the decision to offer revised course packages for students would require discussion amongst the University community as a whole. With faculty members, executive members, and managers representing all University interests, the Committee is quite well-informed and has proven to be an essential asset to the Indigenous Education program.
The External Advisory Committee (pending development)
The External Advisory Committee will consist of representative members from First Nation institutions (including current and potential), nations, communities and businesses. The membership will address issues referred to it by both the IAC and the Caucus. The EAC has a role in long-range planning and identifying issues essential to Indigenous Education.
The Elder's Committee (pending development)
The Elders Committee will be our guiding and managing committee. Each Elder, or the Committee as a whole, is a member of every committee. The Committee's role is to address issues related to Indigenous Education and Athabasca University. The voice of this committee is an essential one.
